Basalt

COLLECTIONS

Natural Stone

Basalts are one of the most common rock types in the world. It is usually grey to black in colour and fine-grained and is also sometimes characterized by small holes in the stone structure due to rapid cooling of lava on the surface of the planet. Basalts such as the famous “Basaltina” (quarried in central Italy), were used by the Roman’s for their roads and monuments in ancient times.

Today, its grey tones and subtle patterns have made this stone a popular choice in contemporary designs in both interior and exterior applications. This stone is often used as countertops, flooring and wall cladding.

Granite

Granite is an igneous rock formed from magma deep within the earth’s crust, granite is generally composed of quartz and feldspar providing high range hardness. In recent years discoveries of so called ‘New Granites’ have introduced vibrant and amazing opportunities in colours and patterns, no longer limiting the range in granite to only homogeneous patterns.

Extremely scratch resistant, heat resistant and chip resistant with low porosity makes granite an excellent material for both internal and external applications. Ideally suited for kitchen bench tops and flooring, granite’s resistance to all types of weather is also the perfect solution for external cladding. Traditionally finished in a high polish, new technology has produced a recent trend towards textured finishes such as flamed, brushed and leather finishes.

Quartzite

Quartzite has similar if not stronger physical-mechanical features than granite. Quartzite is suitable for both internal and external applications depending on the particular type. Quartzite can uniquely offer colours and veining similar to that of marble with the added benefit of the hardness of granite, making this the ideal kitchen bench top material.

Limestone

COLLECTIONS

Natural Stone

Limestone is a sedimentary rock composed largely of calcite. Limestone often resembles untouched beds of the ocean with displays of remaining shells and corals.

Commonly Limestone is produced in a honed finish, as most are not able to take a high polish due to its delicate nature. Limestone displays hues of soft ivory to subtle browns and greys, which compliment any coastal surrounds. A low to mid-range hardness allows these stones to be used internally and some limestones, also externally.

Marble/Dolomite

COLLECTIONS

Natural Stone

Marble is a metamorphic rock resulting from the metamorphism of limestone formed under immense heat and pressure. The mainly calcite composition is recognised by its characteristic swirls and veins deriving from various mineral impurities originally present as grains or layers in the limestone. Of mid-range hardness (approx. MOHS 3–4), marble is ideally suited for bathroom tops, walls and flooring. Marbles uniqueness makes it desirable for kitchen tops, but care and maintenance needs to be a consideration when choosing this stone.

Marble is traditionally used internally in a high polished, mirror like finish however is now also appreciated externally in a variety of finishes such as honed, brushed and sandblasted with a vast range of colours and patterns available.

Travertine varies in colour from dusty white to silver-grey, to gold, coral red and toffee, available filled, unfilled, honed or polished creating a classy and sophisticated appearance.

Current trends have moved towards a honed finish opting for a more untouched “old world” like appeal. Travertine is suitable for both internal and external applications.
